The wine offers notes of ripe red fruit and dark berries with hints of oak and sweet baking spices. Dusty but finely grained tannins lend length and texture to the long finish.
Merkin Vineyards was founded by owner and winemaker Maynard James Keenan. The winery is located in Verde Valley. Fruit is harvested from vineyards in Arizona and New Mexico. Maynard researched wine growing regions around the world to identify the varieties best suited for the high desert conditions found in the Verde Valley, Cochise County and other regions in New Mexico. In 2014 Maynard became the sole owner of the historic Buhl Memorial Vineyard, a 70 acre parcel located in Graham County. The vineyard is named after Albert K. Buhl, a pioneer in Arizona winegrowing. Next year they plan on releasing estate wines made in Arizona using Spanish and Portuguese Varietals. The Chupacabra and the other wines he makes are gaining cult status among wine aficionados.
