Wine maker notes
Alsace Pinot Noir has long been used for rose wines, which was not to bring up its reputation, but since about a decade some ambitious vintners have been trying to make real reds out of it. Here at domaine Ostertag big efforts are made in the vineyard to produce Pinot Noir. It requires a lot of concentration to obtain what makes a great red wine: not natural sugar degree which is kind of easy to get (we don’t use chaptalisation since 1992), but indeed ripe tannins! In order to achieve that, and in parallel to biodynamic farming, we spend a lot of time pulling leaves off to expose the berries to the sun so that tannins ripen well. Then, the key is simply to harvest at the right time and to apply a severe sorting to select only sound berries, and then process the material very gently and respectfully, keeping the best balance of work and non-work to preserve the qualities of the grapes. The FRONHOLZ is a very special piece of land with great personality! Its location, as a hill apart from the main Vosges hill range, on the top and South-West facing side of the Epfig hill, makes it special. This is a very rare exposure for vines in Alsace, the whole vineyard being on the Eastfacing slopes of the Vosges foothills. As a result, there is a better photosynthesis and preserved acidity and aromas, that are never overripe or exotic due to a very good air flow. The Fronholz Pinot Noir is a Vin de Pierre , therefore a terroir wine, from a sandy soil filled with lots of quartz stones, and some limestone deeper underground. The 40 years old vines have a southwest exposure and are farmed using Biodynamic methods, like the domaine’s whole vineyard no exception for the reds!

Food pairing
Like all the Vins de Pierre the Fronholz Pinot Noir will age beautifully up to twenty years. It will match various dishes of white meat and cheeses.
