Campos de Risca is essentially Monastrell, with blends of wines from different plots to give its complex character. Very small proportions of Syrah may be added in some vintages for complexity and balance. Future extensions for the brand will look to single vineyard wines, with possibly some ageing in oak.
|Monastrell is by far and away the most planted variety in the south-east of the country, in the arid hills inland from Alicante and Murcia. It is one of the few varieties that can withstand the harsh climate and still produce excellent wine. The name of the wine comes from the local name for the type of soil: ”Risca” is a bleached, limestone rock which sits on the slopes of the valley sides. It is impressive that anything can grow here, but the rockiness is also an advantage, in that all of the scarce rain that does fall will immediately be filtered down to the sub-soil.
