Clean and bright. Deep cherry colour withpurple glints. On the nose it is very complex. Excellent harmony: strawberry, blackberry and figs; some hints of milky aromas; the ageing results in a clean and new wood with toast, coffee, vanilla, leather and cocoa aromas. On the palate, powerful, extraordinary backbone and elegant. Sweet polished tannins perfectly balanced with spicy and fruity flavours. Smooth and lingering finish.
Vinous 90 points - (100% tempranillo, aged for 12 months in French and American oak): Bright ruby. Rich, smoky aromas of ripe cherry and blackberry are complicated by vanilla and candied rose. Brighter on the palate, showing spicy red- and blackcurrant flavors and good mineral bite. Juicy cassis and black raspberry flavors linger on the sappy, persistent finish. Very nicely balanced and focused, with soft tannins that fade into the fruit.
Wine Advocate 89 points - The 2009 Matarromera Crianza comes from Pago de San Roman and it is aged for 14 months in 70% American and 30% French oak with 70% new barrels. It has a clean, pleasant bouquet that unfurls nicely: black cherries, raisin and a touch of blueberry that remains nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. There is a touch of aggression toward the finish with spice and white pepper. It needs to show a little more finesse but it demonstrates fine persistency. Drink now-2016. (Feb 2013)
