Wine Spectator 91 points - This rich, brawny red sports dense layers of cassis, mulled wild berry, ash and pine, giving way to full, assertive tannins on the dark, bitter finish. Well-cut, but needs time to settle down. Best from 2015 through 2022. 200 cases imported.-NW

Vinous 91 points - Full, saturated red-ruby color. Inky black cherry, blueberry, licorice and bitter chocolate on the nose, complemented by violet and sweet spices. Dense and chewy on the palate, with outstanding intensity to its dark fruit, mineral and chocolate flavors. Finishes broad and long, with substantial building, polished tannins that coat the palate and the front teeth; seems less energetically extracted than the Collepiano, with a somewhat softer mouthfeel. Cellar this for at least five or six years.

Wine Advocate 92 points - The 2008 Sagrantino 25 Anni is made in a style that showcases focus and length above all else. Dark cherries, tar, licorice, camphor and game are some of the notes that flow from the glass. The flavor profile bears some resemblance to Syrah, but the tannins are pure Sagrantino. This is a gorgeous wine from Caprai, but it will require a few years in bottle. The 2008 doesn’t have the sheer size and volume of the 2007, so my hope is it will become approachable at an earlier age. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023. (Feb 2013)
