Wine Advocate 91 points - The Kuhn 2010 Oestricher Doosberg Riesling Erstes Gewachs mingles juicy lemon, fresh peach, and grapefruit with milled grain, toasted nuts, truffle, and crushed stone on a positively creamy yet refreshing palate, for an even more Burgundian impression than accrued to the corresponding Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus. This finishes with decidedly saliva-liberating salinity. I’d look for at least 7-9 years of strong performance.  (Dec 2011)

Wine maker notes
This plot is on a rounded hilltop at the heart of the Doosberg and a slight southwestern slope. The grapes benefit from tender sunbeams until sunset. A gentle wind blows constantly over this inclined plane, protecting the skin of the berries from any dampness so they are able to ripen over a long period. The Riesling is fermented with the natural yeast and is stored in a large wooden vat. The Riesling matured with the lees over 10 months and is filtered unfined just before bottling end of August.

The winery was founded by Jacobus Kuhn in 1786. Today, Peter Jakob represents the eleventh generation of winemakers in the family. The Kuhns organically cultivate 18 hectares of land spread throughout the town of Oestrich applying biodynamic methods. The vineyards are planted on natural south-facing slopes along the Right Bank of the Rhein at an altitude of 70 meters, and are well protected against the cool borealis by the foothills of the Taunus Mountains. A member of the VDP, an exclusive organization of the top 200 growers in Germany dedicated to quality production of indigenous variety, Peter Jakob Kuhn is at the forefront of winemaking today in Germany. Greatly treasured by the German public, his wines are very sought after for their expression of terroir. These are hand-worked wines that count among the best in Rheingau and in all of Germany.
