A unique Mediterranean wine with an abundance of complex aromas and flavors, with a hint of chocolate, leather, coffee, and white pepper.
Wine Enthusiast 88 points - An interesting blend of 53% Marselan, 20% Caledoc, 15% Pinotage and 12% Carignan, this starts off a bit rubbery, but that quickly blows off to reveal attractive scents of blackberry and plum flesh. The medium-weight palate has a texture like crushed velvet and is loaded with ripe black-fruit flavors, while accents of cocoa nib and tobacco unfold on the finish. (Sep 2013)
Wine Enthusiast 92 points - Dense and dark, this heady red is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 13% Syrah. Powerful aromas and flavors of wild blackberry, cassis, cigar-box spice and licorice root abound on the nose and in the mouth, and carry on through the long finish. The structure is firm and gripping, but perfectly matched to the intense fruit flavors. This wine is balanced and attractive now, but greater nuance and complexity should develop with time; try from 2016-2020. - Editor’s Choice (Sep 2013)

Wine maker notes
Tzafit wine is produced from different vineyards in the Judean Plains, close to Tel-Tzafit. The wine is comprised of Mediterranean varietals: Marselan, Caladoc and Carignan with a small amount of Pinotage. The different wines mature in oak casks for a period of 12 months before being blended to produce this original combination. The wine has an intense and complex aroma, which is made up of milk chocolate, strawberry and raspberry with thyme weeds and tobacco. The wine is invigorating, with smooth tannins, a refreshing acidity, a hint of chocolate, leather, coffee, and white pepper. A real Mediterranean wine, that is drinkable now but will only get better after maturation in comfortable conditions.
Tel-Tzafit, with a height of 203 meters stands out because of its height and isolation in the Judean Plains. The climate in the plains is warm, and this provides a fertile environment for the unusual grape seeds that love to grow in the Mediterranean sun.
Barkan winery was born at the end of the 19th century. Its current incarnation is a wine paradise. So how did we do that?
It was actually simple. From the very first days of our existence, we have concentrated our attention on one thing only: grapes’ quality. The top-grade breeds were brought from all over the world and put in Barkan vineyards in Israel. Nowadays, there are dozens of breeds occupying a grand total of over 10 square kilometers of vineyards in winery’s possession, while every breed is grown in an area suitable for it.
In 2000, a new sophisticated winery was established at Hulda kibbutz located in the Judean plain. The winery was designed with 21st century in mind. It boasts the most advanced production technologies in the world. The winery includes laboratories, farms, the packaging center, and the marketing & logistics center. Thanks to the enormous assortment of wine breeds and growth areas, the advanced fermentation methods, as well as over 5,000 natural oak barrels, Barkan winery is a real wine paradise.
