Italian cold cuts, Tuscan style crostini and legume soups
Tre Berte is located between the town of Montepulciano and the nearby Montepulciano Lake. The 130-acre estate was previously owned by the Stuart family of Scotland and the Villa built in the 19th century is named after them. The Montefoschi family purchased Tre Berte in 1998 and they currently have 45 acres of vineyards, some dating back to the early 60s and some acquired in 2001. Antonella Montefoschi manages the winery and oversees production and marketing. She has been focusing on the local clone of Sangiovese, called Prugnolo Gentile, but also experiments with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colorino and Syrah. The training system is predominantly unilateral cordon and Guyot. Tre Berte’s oldest vineyard dates back to 1963 and it has original clones of Prugnolo Gentile, Colorino and Merlot which are closely studied in their development by the University of Florence. The Montefoschi modernized the winery with temperature controlled steel vats, new aging barrels, both large and small. They also restructured the Villa, its frescoes and the nearby pool.
