Bon Cap lies on the banks of the Breede River in the picturesque valley of Eilandia outside the Robertson Wine Valley in South Africa. The river is the vein of our wines. The area is well known for its very low rainfall of only 150mm per annum. Here you’ll find Red Karoo (Terra Rossa) and sandy soils, rich in lime – ideal for growing quality vines. The noble red varieties grown at Bon Cap are: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, and Touriga Nationale. Sustainable farming is a worldwide concern among people who care about the health of their families and the environment. One solution to the problem is organic farming. Organic crops are grown in harmony with nature and strict international regulations prohibit the use of any chemical products such as pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, weed killers, etc. Our family has been farming organically for years; from the start we could see the benefit to the soil. In 1999, Bon Cap decided to apply for international certification and received full organic status from SGS in 2002. When buying produce that claims to be organic, ensure that it has organic certification by looking for the organic logo and registration number on the product. Certification guarantees that the farm and products are monitored and audited by the certifying companies on an annual basis. As we are not allowed to use chicken manure from battery hatcheries, Bon Cap goes to great trouble and expense to obtain natural fertilizers, such as penguin guano. While the stark, leafless vines on other farms make winter-time rather dull, our vineyards are luscious and green with patches of lupine in flower – ranging from yellows to purples. The cover crops (for example, lupine and lucerne) are planted between the vines to benefit the soil – and the local wildlife! To decrease soil compaction Bon Cap uses the Quad Squad 4-wheel motorbike instead of heavy tractors between vine rows. The prevention of soil compaction and the use of cover crops have a tremendous effect on the aeration of the soil, the compost component of the soil and the soil’s ability to retain moisture. Because of our farming methods and the scientific use of cover crops to replenish soil, the soil here is rich in compost, ensuring the premium quality of our wines and the beautiful rose gardens at the Manor. Our distinctive vineyards prove that Bon Cap indeed deserves its name – Good Cape.
