The vintage year 1994 was quite favorable for wine. The vines wintered well and budding began at the normal time. Following favorable early summer rains, flowering occurred under advantageous conditions. The summer was hot. In the early days of autumn there was a bit of precipitation. Sugar levels quickly rose, but acidity was low. The quality of the vintage was high. These are wines with lots of fruit and elegance. A great aged Gruner Veltliner! A brilliant gold-yellow in color, with heaps of fruit: dried apricot, pear, passion fruit, bread with nuts, tea leaves, peppery, typical minerality spice; full-bodied, creamy, dense structure; long finish with impressions of caramel; a dry well balanced late harvest wine.
The illustrious Kirchmayr family has been cellaring extraordinary vintages from their top single vineyard wines for decades. The remarkable project of conveying traditional fruit sourced from the same family growers for over 100 years has passed over the generations into the hands of Andreas and his sister Christina Kirchmayr. The cellar is actually located on the property of the Baroque monastery Stift Seitenstetten in the Fruit District which is located west of the Wachau by 60 miles. Fruit is sourced from various regions such as the Wachau, Kamptal, Weinviertel (North of Vienna), and Lake Neusiedl, where relationships and trust have matured from contracts dating back to the 1890s. These represent some of the best vineyards for each region throughout all of Austria. All Solist series wines are fermented, traditionally, in 500-1000 Liter casks and left for long lees contacts and late bottling with the idea that they will be cared for over 10-20 years, recorked when necessary and are all hand labeled and numbered.
