"A big, mouth filling wine, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, shows the personality of the vintage in its intense fruit. There is plenty of underlying structure in this deep, resonant Cabernet Sauvignon. Mint, flowers and sweet red berries are some of the nuances that are woven into the finish. This is far from an easygoing Napa Cabernet. Although delicious today, it should drink well for a number of years. Another year or so in bottle should help the elements come together even more fully. The 2010 is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024."

Located just north of Calistoga in Napa Valley, CA, Chateau Montelena was founded by Alfred L. Tubbs in 1882. By 1896, it was the seventh largest estate in the Napa Valley. In 1958, the Tubbs family sold the Chateau to Yort and Jeanie Frank, who transformed the estate’s grounds into the beautiful showpiece that it is today. When the Barrett family bought the property in 1972, James Barrett restored the original vineyards and completely refurbished the winery. His son, Bo Barrett is master winemaker and has overseen the production of each and every vintage of Chateau Montelena. His knowledge and more than 30 years of experience ensure consistency in terms of quality and proper expression of the house style. Winemaker Cameron Parry manages all winemaking activities with the help of assistant winemaker Matt Cratfon and vineyard manager Dave Vella. The now infamous Paris tasting of 1976 placed California, and in particular Chateau Montelena at the forefront of the wine world and the family continues to build upon their success. The portfolio now includes Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Riesling.

|This wine shows deep dense plum color with great density. The nose opens with anise and spice before moving into rich layers of blackberry and cherry compote. All that great concentrated fruit is beautifully complemented with barrel tones of vanilla and clove. It is quite youthful and lively on the palate with a good firm acid core - great for food pairing - and abundant velvety tannin. Complex layers of black fruits through the mid palate, with good barrel spice underlayment throughout, are nicely complemented by bright red fruit on the finish.
This wine is quite approachable so young, but it will definitely improve with additional time in the bottle, if you've got the patience.
