"Vajra's 2011 Dolcetto d’Alba emerges from the glass with blackberries, smoke, game and incense. This is a decidedly dark, brooding Dolcetto that at times recalls Syrah in its flavor profile. Firm tannins frame the long, insistent finish. This is a fabulous showing and a serious over achiever. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. " 90 Points - The Wine Advocate

G.D. Vajra was founded in 1972 by husband and wife Aldo and Milena Vaira. When Aldo inherited almost 100 acres of vineyards in Vergne – the highest village in the Commune of Barolo – he broke from family tradition and began producing wines under his own label. The wines are made from 100% estate fruit that is triple sorted by hand. For more than 40 years, this wonderfully humble and hard-working couple have crafted soulful and honest expressions of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Moscato and Riesling. G.D. Vajra is entirely a family affair. The winery was named after Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico, and Aldo and Milena work with their daughter Francesca and sons, Giuseppe and Isidoro. Their guiding philosophy is simple - they are not modern, they are not traditional. They practice sustainable farming and craft sensitive, transparent wines of place by patiently allowing the fruit to dictate its own evolution. “I try to make wines that give people joy. In the past, wine was food, it was necessary for sustenance. Today that is not the case; we choose to drink for pleasure. I want to make wines that bring people happiness.” ~ Aldo Vajra
Wine maker notes
Luigi Baudana is the last scion of one of the oldest wine families of Serralunga d'Alba. His winery has been a secret for a bunch of fortunate wine lovers for over thirty years, producing a limited amount of Barolo and other wines. In 2003 Luigi and wife Fiorina started to look for a future for their estate. The research lasted long, until they found in Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro Vaira, children of Aldo and Milena of G.D. Vajra, Barolo, the enthusiasm, energies and will to preserve the past history and prolong the future of this beautiful little jewel. The three kids, in their early twenties, consider themselves ‘i guardiani’ [the guardians] of this century-long winery and have started operations in 2008 vintage in the Baudana cellar. Farming is sustainable and takes advantage of organic and biodynamic practices; no chemical manipulation occur to the wines.

Technical notes
The Vairas accumulated cuttings from the best vines in the area and planted a combination of mass and clonal selections between1982-2002 to soils that are primarily limestone with some marl. The hand-picked, triple sorted fruit was harvested from three estate vineyards in Barolo (Coste di Vergne, Fossati and Pascolo) and Ravera in Nerollo region. The fruit was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 6-10 days with frequent pump overs and aged in stainless steel tanks until the following spring.

Producer
The estate of G.D. Vajra, situated in Vergne the highest village in the Commune of Barolo, was established in 1972 by Giuseppe Domenico. Milena and Aldo Vaira are the current owners. Both have worked the vineyards since the early 1970s. Vajra currently owns 40 sustainably farmed hectares in such strategic spots as Bricco delle Viole, Fossati, La Volta, Coste di Vergne. The vineyards are planted with Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera at elevations between 350-400 meters, which results in distinctive and aromatic wines. Their philosophy remains faithful to the traditional wines of Piedmont. "I try to make wines that give people joy. In the past wine was a food, it was necessary for sustenance. Today that is not the case; we choose to drink for pleasure. I want to make wines that bring people happiness.” ~ Aldo Vajra
