Wine Advocate 90 points - The house’s 1998 La Grande Dame reveals notable clarity and precision. This focused, poised wine emerges from the glass with well-articulated flowers, pears, smoke, crisp apples and minerals in a medium-bodied style. The wine appears to have enough freshness and sheer depth to support another decade or so of aging. La Grand Dame represents a significant step up from the estate’s other wines. In 1998 La Grande Dame is 64% Pinot Noir (Ay, Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay and Bouzy) and 36% Chardonnay (Avize, Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger). This is Lot 510 2572, disgorged between December, 2006 and January, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018. (Dec 2008)
Wine Spectator 88 points - Broad and open-textured, this offers lemon, apple and peach flavors. A touch coarse, ending with a chalky sensation. Drink now through 2018. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. –BS (Dec 31 2007)
Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin's Prestige Cuvee, La Grande Dame, is a very great wine which pays homage to a very great lady in the Champagne world, Madame Cliquot. The incomparable finesse of this cuvee results from a blend of eight of the house's traditional Grand Crus.
Strength and structure come from the dominance of Pinot Noir (60-65%) from the best plots on the Montagne de Reims (Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay) and the Grande Vallee de la Marne (Ay), blended with the freshness and delicacy of Chardonnay (35-40%) from the most prestigious crus on the Cote des Blancs (Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger).
|Each Cuvee is true to the Veuve Clicquot style and spirit, faithfully maintained from the time when Madame Clicquot was running the House under the motto, ”Only one quality, the finest”. Created with a majority of Pinot Noir in the blend, the Veuve Clicquot Champagne style is noted for a firm structure, full-bodied texture and rich aromas.
